Dominique excelled herself this morning as the breakfast she served was phenomenal. Homemade chocolate muffins with choc chips in them? I never want to leave.
Unfortunately Daniel had other plans so reluctantly we packed up our stuff, took one last photo of the beautiful view and headed off on our penultimate journey to Volcan Arenal.
Until 2010 this volcano was spouting lava and every night from miles around, a spectacular show could be seen. I’m gutted that it’s stopped, I would have loved to have seen it. Maybe it will start again, just for me.
The drive was long but once we reached Arenal Lake, the views were stunning. Seeing the volcano across the lake is one of the most awe inspiring views I’ve seen.
The town close to where we are staying (la Fortuna) is anything but. It’s soul has been ripped out, if it ever had one, and it’s an ugly tourist town with little charm.
Fortunately we are staying about 1 mile outside and as I am writing this, I am sitting on the balcony of our bungalow, watching a huge rainstorm and listening to the howler monkeys complaining. It’s dark but birds are still tweeting and I can hear the cicadas. It’s possible dinner might be some bread and salami we bought for tomorrow’s hike, but I’m not complaining.
