Today we had to leave Villa Ambra as they were full for the next few nights, and relocate to Avola.
After another belly busting breakfast we attempted to rearrange the contents of our suitcases and rucksacks. we wanted to leave most of our belongings temporarily at VA and go exploring, collecting our luggage later, on our way to Avola.
It took half an hour of Mensa level machinations to eventually get our cases as we wanted them along with our rucksacks packed for a day’s exploring. I’m tempted to wear exactly the same clothes for the rest of the holiday as I really cannot face re-adjusting anything ever again.
As we attempted to drive out of VB’s car park, the quick learning kittens came out in force, weaving in and out of the car wheels, no doubt hoping for some more Peppa pig deliciousness. Obviously I had to get out of the car and rescue (play with) them until Steve managed to dodge them enough to get out of the gates sans squashed cat.
As we drove to our first port of call, it had the damn cheek to rain – heavily. The weather forecast is looking horrendous for the week ahead but today was meant to be sunny. Luckily, the cloudburst past and the sun was out again by the time we arrived at Isola Correntini, the southern most point of Sicily.
The island has an old lighthouse on it and the attraction is that you can walk/swim to it via a causeway from the beach. Two intrepid young girls were the first to go but soon returned as one of them was in charge of keeping the picnic lunch dry and it looked in grave danger of being swept away.
Undeterred, they soon reappeared minus the lunch but with a large red float. Didn’t look too tasty to me but then I’m not Italian. (Haha joke).
They eventually made it to the island but I’m ashamed to say we decided it looked too cold and rough and we had a snooze on the beach instead!
The beach was large and nice, but like so many we visit these days, was littered with rubbish. Everybody – take your fricking rubbish home with you!!!!
By 2pm we were hungry and decided to drive to portopalo for lunch, hopefully some fish. Unfortunately no go. Portopalo is stunning but quite untouched by tourism it would seem and we couldn’t find anywhere we wanted to eat. Fair play to the Sicilians for not bowing to the God of commercialism but a nice little restaurant by the sea – would that be too much to ask?
Eventually we arrived at Marzamemi. Again we struggled to find somewhere open and settled for a pleasant enough place selling grilled squid. It was ok but as is the way, two minutes round the corner was a plethora of cute little eating places.
We drove along the coast and back to VB to pick up our luggage, then on to Avola.
Meh. Nowhere near as nice as Noto but our room is spacious and only 5 mins from the sea.
We made use of the supermarket opposite and bought lunch for tomorrow along with beer and wine. (We’ve got a fridge so silly not to).
Wandered in to town later with my eyes redder than Dracula’s. My lenses had welded themselves to my eyes during the day and I had a devil of a job getting them out. Hope they’re alright by tomorrow.
By the way, apologies for the photos. For some reason they are all jumbled and I don’t know how to rearrange them.

Courtyard at Deja Vu. Typical of the run down but atmospheric buildings of Sicily

Beach without litter
Typical farmer’s transport. The chassis are often bent due to overloading, giving the wheels a funny bow-legged look
Isola Carrenti. You can just about see the two girls swimming out to the island
