We started this walk from West street in Wentworth Falls (it’s a town as well as a waterfall). We dithered for ages as the track was not obvious. Eventually we discovered it, the entrance and sign covered by undergrowth. Obviously not well used, and judging by the glares from the homeowners across the road, some would rather it stayed that way.
Again, we walked in fog but not quite as bad as yesterday. It felt eerily quiet and I was quite glad when we met a young German girl hiking on her own. I think she was pretty relieved to see us too. We continued to bump into each other at every intersection as our walk instructions were not clear to say the least.
It was a stunning hike with lots of little glades and waterfalls along the way. The best falls were the Empress falls. Sadly we did not see the Blue Mountains in their full glory as the fog got worse and it poured with rain.
To be honest the actual Wentworth Falls themselves were rather disappointing. Katoomba Falls are more spectacular.
Our walk instructions wanted us to hike back pretty much the same way but as we could see very little we decided to take a more direct path back to our starting point.
We had a quick wander around the village of Leura and then back to Katoomba for some (rather pricey) tea and scones.
Now much as I love you Aussies, you do have a bit to learn regarding what is a scone. Pay attention please. A scone is round and is not a cake. Basically I was given a make your own victoria sandwich. It was ok but a bit brick like and definitely not a scone.
I decided to have a wander round the shops while Steve went back to the motel. It didn’t take long as all the little stores close at 4.30pm. Very strange.
Tomorrow we will probably do the blue mountain scenic drive then head off for Wollongong.
Verdict on the Blue Mountains? Well, the weather hasn’t been in our favour but I’m glad I’ve seen them. Having said that, we are blessed with beautiful waterfalls in the Uk as well as mountains and hills so I’d have been disappointed if this was all we came to Australia for. But it isn’t so I’m not.
