Day out to Kailua

Woke up to showers today which didn’t bode well for my planned excursion to Kailua. Still, we’re British and a bit of rain doesn’t stop play.
The drizzle increased once we were on the bus and the mountains in the heart of the island were hardly visible. However, once we arrived in Kailua the rain stopped and the clouds began to clear.
Kailua beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu and it’s not hard to see why. Even with dark skies behind, the sea is emerald and turquoise and the sand is white with a pearly pink tinge. Backed by jagged mountains in the distance it is absolutely stunning.
We sat on the beach for a while and watched the kite surfers. Some of them were very skilful. I’d love to try it but I have visions of being blown away far into the ocean.
I got a terrible attack of the giggles watching a young lady in front of me continually jumping. Her friend was trying to get the perfect “jump” camera shot and it was obviously taking a long time to perfect it. Poor girl must have been exhausted!
Next on the agenda was the pillbox walk, a hike to two ww2 bunkers that deliver a great view over Kailua bay and waiamanalo bay. It’s a bit of a scramble to get up there, but the views are jaw dropping.
Finally, we went to Lanikai beach for a dip and a lay down – it’s a hard life!
The rain clouds started gathering, so we eventually found the bus stop and made the journey home. Very entertaining bus passengers who broke the “no loud conversations” rule (I kid you not, it is a rule and much needed with my favourite foghorn friends). Strange semi fantasy conversations re why planes go missing and keys given by the Pope enabling you to go to Heaven. Bizarre.
Went to the Australian Outback restaurant for dinner and came out feeling as though every cell in my body had been rung out. It was so salty. Second horrid meal there. Avoid at all costs.
Tomorrow we fly to Big Island, stay overnight then onto LA then one night and back to UK.
Think it should be relatively chilled and hopefully uneventful, so I shall sign out of the Ozdyssey unless something unusual happens.
It’s been a great trip, with the odd calamity thrown in to spice things up a bit.
A complete coincidence, but we noticed the other day that all the countries we spent significant time in this trip had the Union Jack incorporated into their flags.
I like that.
