Funny how the combination of sun, sand and bedchairs turns me into a slothful creature, so lazy even putting sun cream on seems like the most onerous chore ever. (I know, you all really hate me now).
The only thing to do in these situations is people watch. I have to confess and as some of you already know, it’s one of my favourite hobbies.
First of all, Hatty. A holiday maker, She wears a straw trilby, no bra under a racer

back tshirt and a sarong. She dances on the beach to music on her phone and “helps” the fishermen pull in their fishing nets in the morning. I can tell by their body language they’d really rather she didn’t but she doesn’t take the hint.
Next is our lady beach seller who steve and I observed pacing the beach all day yesterday, good naturedly displaying beautiful sarongs that no-one wanted to buy. We decided to buy one because she was so dedicated and sweet despite the heat and being ignored by everyone. Turns out her husband died a long time ago and she’s had to support her children on her own.
Our most interesting person award goes to Mongolian lady.
She cuts an eccentric figure, dressed in an old fashioned swim costume -a bit like the “strongman” suits from Victorian times. On her head she wears a black speedo swimming cap, whether she’s swimming or not. If she’s walking along the beach, she carries an umbrella to shield her from the sun or dons a towel.
Mongolian lady is interested in everything. From the fishermen pulling in their catch, to people collecting clams, she’s watching everything closely. She loves swimming and we saw her teach her husband to swim. She plays with her daughter for ages in the pool with great enthusiasm. I absolutely applaud her zest for life.
There are many more characters on the beach I could tell you about such as the German couple terrified of the dog sleeping under one of their bedchairs, the sneaky older man pretending to be staying at the hotel but not, the French woman totally frustrated by her two young daughters – the list goes on  – but that’s for another day. I’ve got chillin’ to do.

  1. Sounds like a holiday! Your observations are truly insightful, from the sad state of the physical and interpersonal environments, to the mesmerising (and sometimes perplexing) behaviour of people abroad.
