Had the most incredible breakfast today.
Didn’t start well as I couldn’t find the “dining room” but at least as I wandered around I found some monkeys. They are very well behaved and stay in the trees instead of raiding people breakfasts. Must be very tempting for them as there is always a banana in it.
Anyway, breakfast started with freshly squeezed pineapple juice and coffee. Followed by toasted, freshly baked bread and homemade jams.
Sri Lankan restaurants love white sliced bread. I loathe the stuff and refuse to eat it so it’s a treat to get “real” bread even if it is white.
Scrambled eggs lightly seasoned with oregano came next followed by curd and trickle with passion fruit and papaya.
“Curd and trickle?” I hear you say.
Curd is a creamy yoghurt made from water buffalo milk and trickle is basically a light treacle made from palm honey. It is totally delicious and even though I don’t normally eat dairy, I had to make an exception for this delight.
After this belly busting breakfast we decided a bit of exercise was in order so we walked to the much lauded Jungle Beach. Basically a very small crescent of sand with a few trees behind it, crammed with people. We didn’t hang around.
Next we walked to the huge Bhudda stupa funded by the Japanese. Really nice, there’s always a feeling of calm at these places I find. Beautiful views. Sufficiently moved, I tied my beach towel around me sarong style and popped into the temple.
It was so pretty, filled with gold and glitz and flowers.
Embarrassingly we forgot to take any money with us so we couldn’t make a donation. I shall walk up there again before we leave here or I’ll be worried about bad karma.
The rest of the day was spent on the beach but I wasn’t happy. Rubbish all over the beach and in the sea- disgusting. Most of it had been swept in by the current but some of it is just from people littering on the beach. Grrr! Really hate this about Sri Lanka. Also not impressed by the Russian tourists – they just throw their fag packets on the ground.
Dinner was at an outdoor restaurant called “Bedspace”. Down some dubious looking dark alleyways , it’s a guesthouse with a big professional looking outdoor kitchen. You can see the chef and his staff cooking – very London. Full of well heeled Brits. Food was excellent as was the gin and tonic I had. What a treat!
