Today called for a gentle stroll, saving our energy for the “big one”.
Before meeting Nik and Jan, we decided to check out the car park where we would be starting our Triglav ascent from.
It was a beautiful morning and a joy to drive through the pretty little Slovenian villages. I think Slovenians have OCD in the nicest way. Even their meadows look manicured and impossibly tidy.
The car park seemed fine and we popped into the Sport Hotel and got some more information re Triglav. Basically the dry weather for Wednesday is holding but Thursday might be wet, so if we have the energy, we should try and summit on Wednesday.
The walk through the gorge and to the waterfall was gentle and uneventful apart from a nerve wracking, ledge hugging path high above the gorge. We did turn around and retrace our steps but poor Jan had to execute a 360degree turn on a very narrow ledge which would have been bad news for any vertigo sufferers.
Even with a tea stop (and in Nik’s case a blueberry pie stop) and not arriving quite where we expected to be (as in getting lost), we were back in Stara Fuzina by 4 so the serious issue of packing overnight rucksacks could commence.
Climbing Triglav means staying overnight in a refuge and from what I can gather, it’s somewhat basic. You have to make a choice between carrying a massive rucksack and taking all your creature comforts or be lazy and take a small one and suck it up. I’ve chosen the latter. Which means even a hairbrush won’t fit in. Some would say it really wouldn’t make much difference to me, which is cruel but sadly true.
Packing, sandwich making, planning for our onward journey. Yes we already have to think about that as we’ll be exhausted by Thursday and we have to move on from our apartment on Friday. It’s looking as though our plans for next week may have to change due to bad weather. Best to get something in the bag now so next stop is Ljubljana for a couple of nights.
Tomorrow morning is T day so a good nights sleep is required – night night!
