Sky Bar/Spindleruv Mlyn

The Sky Bar at the Hotel Horizont proved to be a real treat.

High up on the 18th floor, it had a comfortable, retro yet communist feel of the 1980’s, before the Velvet Revolution. I could picture communist bigwigs relaxing on the huge leather seats, drinking their choice of destilat.

We also relaxed on the leather seats/sofas but chose an aperitif of Prosecco to toast our anniversary, followed by the Czech rose wine recommended by the waiter.

Our meal was superb and the dessert of strawberries cooked in honey with black pepper and marscapone was divine. Tbh I wouldn’t have had it but the two guys who ran the bar and restaurant persuaded us and they were right to do so.

While we were there, Petr who was the cocktail maker extraordinaire let two children who were with their dad help him make cocktails. So nice.

Today we went to Spindleruv Mlyn which is 15 km away but takes 50 minutes to drive to. the weather was really quite cold. 12 degrees with a biting wind that blew every now and again.

We walked along the river which is the source of the Elbe and then ascended 500m , giving us a good view of the Giant Mountains. That ended up being a 10 mile walk on tired legs so we treated ourselves to hot chocolate and strudel.

Tomorrow we leave CZ and move on to Dresden.

Although the Czechia mountains have been a bit tame, I’ve really enjoyed visiting Czechia. The food is good and varied, the people are nice, the history is fascinating – it’s very civilised and I don’t mean to be patronising . I expected it to be similar to Bulgaria or Romania but it’s more like Western Europe than Eastern. Glad we came.
