Needless to say, I awoke with a terrible headache in the night, courtesy of 500ml of dubious rose wine and a lager. I really must practise more. I could blame it on the massive thunderstorm that broke in the night , but that would be lying.
Luckily for me, Steve had declared today as a rest day so I could have a bit of a lie-in. I rarely believe these declarations of “rest days” as they usually still involve miles of walking and plenty of activity, it’s just a bit of a later start.
Today was no exception.
Our first planned activity was to walk up to the castle and generally explore it. It’s called the Palamidi Castle and to reach the top, there are around 900 steps. It’s definitely worth the climb as the views are stunning. Be careful though, our legs felt quite wobbly by the time we got back down to the bottom of the castle.
Next was lunch. Staggering around the town last night, we saw a gyros restaurant and we managed to locate it again. Steve obviously had to have the giant gyros but my ordinary sized one was massive and I couldn’t eat it all. It did stop the leg wobble though.
Nafplio old town is gorgeous. Full of winding streets with restored buildings housing beautiful jewellery shops and restaurants. Needless to say I got hurried through there on the way to a trail around Nafplio’s mini peninsula. Sadly it was shut due to rockfalls but we managed to get on to a trail further along which took us along a path which ended at Karathona beach. This path is spectacular with amazing views across the sea and vertical cliffs behind, perfect for rock climbers.
We had clocked up 9 miles by this time so we decided to go home but locate Lidle on the way and pick up some supplies. Add on another 2 miles and that is not my idea of a restful day. Still, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
