Our journey home was long but uneventful. The weather is freezing here but clear and frosty, perfect festive weather.
We were dropped off by our cabbie at 6am. We had an interesting conversation with him on the way as he asked why didn’t British white people look after their parents the way his culture did? Thought provoking for all of us!When we arrived home, I paid him, gave him a tip and was surprised a few minutes later to get a call from him saying I’d overpaid. He drove back and gave me back a tenner – I’d given him a £20 note instead of £10.
Strange how one small event can encapsulate so much.
I can’t even begin to understand South Africa. I found it a complicated place. Geographically beautiful, historically it hasn’t been a beautiful place from a human point of view. It’s still seems to be struggling to find its way.
There is corruption, prejudice, gangs and poverty everywhere. It feels shaky. And scary. Talking to people, White South Africans feel insecure and many black South Africans still live very poor lives. Things could go either way.
I can only hang on to my thoughts re our interactions with our cab driver. We’re all different – different cultures, different skin colour etc. But the “good” people are everywhere – we love our families, we want to laugh, and we want to do good.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for you SA
