Sofia

Poor Steve has been struck down by either food poisoning or a tummy bug. Whichever, after a rough night, he was definitely not up for any breakfast and neither was I if there was even a remote possibility of being poisoned. We waited until S felt a bit better then got on our way.

Luckily our drive to Sofia wasn’t a long one (2hours) and we knew where the hotel was from previous visits so the journey was all very stress free.

Although we have stayed in Sofia before, we have never explored it so Steve valiantly declared we’d get a taxi into the centre and have a look around. Unfortunately the weather was so hot it was just unpleasant and made S feel awful so we lasted about an hour before we got a (very expensive) taxi back to our hotel.

We did manage a swim in the hotel pool and by dinner time S was sufficiently revived to attempt some eating. Anyone who knows Steve is aware that his ability to eat is legendary and however unwell he feels, he always manages to stuff something down. It shows how ill he felt that he missed breakfast. This time he managed to consume a huge veal steak and half my chips. He did suffer some fairly horrible gripes after but still….

Today we visited the Vitosha National Park which was a great idea as it was lovely and cool up on the mountain. We managed a reasonable hike and visited the Dragalevski monastery. Then it was a quick nap back at the hotel followed by cramming all our worldly goods back into our suitcases and off to the airport.

Sadly our airport experience did not allow our holiday to end on a high. A delay of an hour and a quarter was actually needed by the time we got through bag drop and security. Everything was literally at a snails pace. And the Aspire Lounge (BA subscribes to it) was hilariously awful. I’ll let the photos show the delights available to us. Still not all bad, plenty of vodka.

Ah well, at least we’ll look forward to getting home.
