Tenerife – Why?

Tenerife- land of black sand, winter sun and package holidays.

Why are we here? Why not somewhere more far flung, more exotic, more suited to the independent traveller?

That was the plan but grandchildren change things. Our 4 week holidays have been shrunk to under 2 weeks for the time being. This is our choice so I’m not complaining but it makes it a bit more challenging to explore places like Columbia or Brazil for instance. Even the most hyperactive explorer would struggle to condense those countries into 10 days. I would’ve preferred Mauritius  if only for the tropical warmth (further away but also a destination for those that enjoy the delights of an all-inclusive ) but flights that did not involve S sitting in a seat with his knees touching his ears eluded us.

We have been to Tenerife before. I didn’t bother blogging about it then because that was in the days when a 10 day jaunt wasn’t worth the bother of putting finger to keyboard. I regret this now as we have no record other than photos of the fabulous walks we did and which we’ll probably end up doing again because we’ve forgotten where they were.

To be honest, we did so much walking because the weather was too cold to do much else. In fact I can’t say we have had any luck at all so far with the Canary Islands and their fabled reputation for winter warmth.

We are staying in the south  of the island rather than the north where we’ll  be swapping lush vegetation for a more commercialised environment but the weather is better in the south and we’ll be giving ourselves the best chance possible of feeling warm. It’s not been the best of summers and a vitamin D top up is required.

This is your last chance Canaries, don’t let us down.

Here are a few photos of the walks we did last time:
