The Hills are Alive

Day 21 – Bethune/Home

An early wake up alarm today. Neither of us wanted a rerun of our last road trip where we ended up involuntarily visiting all areas of Calais port before arriving at our ferry with minutes left to embark.

After eating our tiny ,leprechaun-sized breakfast provided by the home (Irish theme today as we’re sailing on Irish Ferries)  we were off to Calais. This time we arrived ludicrously early but I passed the time by buying stuff and searching for throws. (Don’t ask)

I am assuming all will be well so this will be the last post. Speaking of the Last Post, we wanted to go to Ypres and see the Menin gate but all the accommodation was booked. Another time.

That’s it – road trip done. Have I enjoyed it? Yes I have – with caveats. I hate stepping in dog poo on paths and it’s annoying when the weather doesn’t play ball. However, the hills are still alive and they can be visited another time. Dog poo is another story.

Road trips are fun and it was great that we did manage to find the sun and get some relaxation. There’s always something new to see and experience while you wend your way through a variety of countries. Having said that I think it’s something to do when you have plenty of energy and all your faculties. I can’t see us doing this in our eighties – but then again, you never know.

Here are a few photos from each place we stayed plus one from Calais.
