Day 4 – Germany/Austria/Slovenia

German sign. Nice they’re so concerned about our bowels

  Lake Bled

  Beer in the sunshine

  Our apartment

It’s not just us in the UK who are fed up with EU bureaucracy. Chatting last night to our German B and B owner, he told us how he was expected to make changes to his business that are going to cost him 50,000euros. This is all down to health and safety requirements, many of which seem frankly ridiculous. He makes very little money as it is, and this could well force him out of business. Only the big chains of hotels can afford to meet the standards of the EU. Individuality and entrepreneurship will soon be a thing of the past if this continues. We are becoming a homogenised society – such a shame.

Another wet driving day. We set off from Reiden am forggensee and drove cross country to join the motorway to Salzburg. The temperature dropped to 7 degrees – where the hell is summer?! We were getting concerned it might snow!

Thank goodness it didn’t and we drove through Austria uneventfully and on to Bled in Slovenia.

Lake Bled is stunning and the fact that the sun decided to come out made it even prettier. Interestingly, every other person we passed while walking by the lake was a Brit. We stopped for a beer by the lake and the group of young people next to us were straight out of “Made in Chelsea”. I honestly expected to see a camera crew filming them.

We have a nice apartment in a renovated house and are looking forward to cooking our own food and having vegetables!

Hope the weather remains good tomorrow as we are planning to walk to the Vintgar Gorge.
