Trincomalee- warts and all

At breakfast this morning Hattie’s boobs were hanging out. Big time. She was wearing what looked like dungarees without a bra. It was really quite outrageous. Reactions were interesting but most people could not help staring. I suspect this was the exact reaction she hoped for.
Moving on, we got a tuktuk into town to get some money and also have a look at the harbour. The harbour is one of the deepest in the world and is currently being redeveloped by the Chinese.
We walked along Main Street, not the most attractive of roads, where I saw a crow eating an enormous (dead) rat.
We then arrived at a point where we could see the main harbour across the bay. The water was black with oil and pollution. The smell was revolting – sewage and petrol. A man was fishing there. My God, you would never want to eat anything out of there. It was a scene from hell. We hailed a tuktuk and got out of there.
Our hotel is a sanctuary, a privileged little oasis in a very raw area. But even here, the protection from the distressingly polluted outside world is limited.
We had strolled along the beach earlier in the week to find the fishing village 2 minutes away from us awash with rubbish.
Plastic bottles, wrappers, a dead chicken- a whole swathe of beach was covered in litter. And no-one gives a shit.
The fishermen just throw their garbage onto the beach without a second thought. They keep finding plastic bags, bottles etc in with the fish in their fishing nets. It’s no surprise you morons, you’re the ones putting it in the sea in the first place!
A huge trawler can be seen not far out to sea, hauling massive nets full of random sea life, anything they don’t want thrown back in the sea, dead.
The local fishermen bring in the most pathetic hauls as the trawler has taken everything the sea has to give.
It really is the most miserable scenario yet the holiday makers choose to ignore it, taking pictures of only the beautiful bits. But by doing this, we are all in denial, playing into the hands of the people who should be held accountable.
Well, here are my pictures of the rubbish. I’ve told you about the trawlers. Pollution and over fishing are just plain wrong. Everyone has a part to play. If we are all vocal about it, maybe things can change.
