Steve recently read an article that stated Italians have the healthiest diet in the world. Well anyone who eats cake for breakfast gets my vote.
Also they do know how to make a chocolate croissant. Here’s the recipe:
1.) Add lots of chocolate to the interior of the croissant
2.) Add even more chocolate so no part of it lacks chocolate
3.) Add a bit more chocolate
Eat with a double espresso and you’ll be climbing the walls for a good 2 hours.
Dinner is a marathon eating event.
Your order of a primi piatti will usually bring you a massive dish of pasta coated in a sauce of some sort. And I mean massive. But before this, you’ll get a little antipasto. We’ve had bruschetta, olives, deep fried cheese balls and a glass of rose spumante.
You will be burstingly full by this time, but you need to eat your secondi piatti which could be deep fried seafood, chicken, steak etc. You might get some veggies with this but generally it won’t be a lot.
Most people at this point will look a little green when the waiter asks if you would like dolce (dessert) but if you are piggy enough, this is likely to be panne cotta, or a local dessert such as pasticciotto (I haven’t had this custard and cherry filled tart yet but give me time).
Next, no matter how sickeningly over stuffed you are feeling (serves you right if you had the dolce) you must promenade. This consists of walking up and down the impossibly gorgeous oldest street in the local town. You must look glamorous and wear your highest most glitzy shoes and never, ever stumble on the extremely ancient and slippery slabs that line the road.
For the men, you must wear boat shoes, top of the range trainers or elegant slip-ons. I think you get thrown in jail if you wear socks and sandals.
By the time you’ve done this a couple of times you might be able to manage a teeny tiny granita or a bigger gelato. Skip the coffee though or you will be awake all night.
Wake up in the morning and do it all again.
We’ve only been here 3 nights but already I have 2 skirts and a pair of shorts that have shrunk.
Probably not the healthiest diet in the world but whose counting?
