I could have sworn that Steve declared today a rest day. Our legs had worked hard yesterday and I was looking forward to sitting in the sun, catching up with emails and reading my kindle.
It was freezing until 10ish when the sun started to warm things up a bit.
Two hours in and the fidgeting from Steve was becoming a little annoying. Two and a half hours later we were on our way to Sisteron.
To be honest it would have been a travesty to miss out on Sisteron. Dominated by a huge citadel, the town is extremely pretty and with a sky so clear and blue, it was a feast for the eyes.
The citadel first appeared in the 11th century but Sisteron itself has been inhabited for 4000 years. They haven’t been so lucky with the welfare of the people though -two thirds of the population were wiped out by several different plagues in 1482 and between 1630 and 1744, most of the population were killed by plague and typhus.
The citadel itself was doing fine until ww2 when it was accidentally bombed by friendly fire. Oops! Still they’ve made a good job of rebuilding it.
From the citadel there is a great view of the surroundings, including an unusual rock formation. When I looked very closely I could see a girl climbing up it. Amazing!
Home and our last night in our little Provence abode.
I looked out over the olive groves at about 10pm and the sky was so clear and dark , I could see the most amount of stars I’ve seen in a long time. The longer I looked, the more I could see, clusters and clusters of them.
Magical.
