The nostalgic drive home through France lost its rosy glow soon after leaving Perouges.
Avoidance of the tolls meant tedious driving along featureless roads. Even worse, not one of the rest stops had toilets. In the end we pulled into a farm track and did what had to be done there. Poor lorry drivers! I think the French authorities are rather keen for them to use the toll roads.
An overnight in Epinal just confirmed the dullness of French towns and saw us in bed by 8.30pm!
The next day we decided to hang the cost and get to our destination of Douai speedily. A shopping and food stop broke the journey as did a sprint back to KFC where Steve had left his man bag with the passports in it. (Partly my fault as Steve had left it in my care when he went to the loo and I forgot about it. Men shouldn’t have bags, it’s all I can do to remember mine.)
Douai was slightly more interesting than Epinal but I’m done with pootling back to my home destination. It just prolongs the pain, means extra nights of broken sleep in cheap hotels and eating food I don’t particularly like. Best to have a destination you particularly want to go to, otherwise get home asap.
We are now sitting in our car at Dunkirk waiting to board the ferry. There is a definite air of tension here. Armed soldiers are around, lots of checking and rechecking people’s cars. Welcome back to the “real” world of terrorism and fear. Happy days
I hate finishing on a low note so I’ve picked out some of my favourite photos from our trip. Enjoy!
