Calabria-Coast to coast and other things

Day 2 -Soverato

The day started with a lie-in (a rarity these days), a bit of a hangover (also a rarity thank goodness) and an empowering typical Italian breakfast.

Our b&b provided vouchers for us to have a coffee and a croissant at a bakery  just down the road at Soverato Dulci. We weren’t expecting much but the bakery appeared to attract the smart crowd of Soverato and beyond. We got there just in time to grab a table as the glitterati (and I do mean glitz) arrived. Definitely underdressed in shorts and T-shirt , I drank my cappuccino (only ok to drink before 11am), gorged myself on the most enormous chocolate croissant and people watched. Perfect start to the day.

Next it was back to the Palazzo Ambra (palace it it is not, but it is very pleasant) to pack our rucksacks for the next three days.

This was more difficult than I thought especially when I realised I had only packed 4 pairs of knickers for the entire 2 weeks – I was obviously a bit over focused on the hike.   I could buy  some more but I’ve never been successful purchasing pants abroad so washing will need to be done.

Once we had both packed for the trek as far as we could and made copious lists reminding ourselves not to forget various items in the morning, it was time for the beach and a gelato.

The pleasure of a snooze on the sand with the waves crashing against the shoreline can never be underestimated, particularly when it has been preceded by a double gelato.

Aperitifs were taken at the same haunt as yesterday evening. Our waiter even remembered our order and had two peronis lined up.

Dinner was at I Compari trattoria near our accommodation and it was a real find. After we arrived , locals and a few tourists like us streamed in. The food was excellent and great value. Steve is now a pasta convert.

A quick saunter around town then an early night before day 1 of the coast to coast hike. Weather looks good, accommodation is sorted, all we have to worry about is will our bodies hold up?
