Day 7 – Capo Vaticano
A combination of yesterday evening’s excitement and weary legs etc from the trek meant a leisurely day was on the cards.
After coffee (Antonia left us some far superior coffee than yesterday’s) , breakfast and another coffee, we got the washing on and sauntered up to the local shop. Nothing as exciting as a Lidl or even a Conad here, just a local shop selling local stuff plus the usual mish mash of beach shoes , snorkels and the like.
Steve had cooking plans today. A replica of the carbonara he had in Soverato was on the cards so we went and sought out the various ingredients required. Unfortunately the shop didn’t have pork cheeks or dried black boar but he did manage to find some pancetta, njuda and pecorino. This delight will be served up tomorrow.
A quick look at the beautiful, crystal clear sea from the viewpoint near our house and before we knew it , it was time for lunch.
After that it was hang the washing up time followed by beach time.
The beach is accessed by a ridiculous number of steps and a padlocked gate (we have a key) before the delights of the little cove can be experienced.
The downside of the beach is it’s very rocky and naturally we left our beach shoes behind in good old Blighty as we didn’t have room in our cases. No doubt we’ll buy more, wear them for two days, somehow cram them in our bags and leave them behind next time we go to a rocky beach.
After a couple of hours it was gelato time where we were served mediocre ice-cream by a disinterested lady and watched a terrifying forest fire gain traction on the hill opposite the restaurant.
It really is horrific how quickly these things get out of hand. One minute there’s a bit of smoke, the next there’s massive flames decimating everything in its path. I’m presuming it was eventually extinguished.
Today there was a wedding near the gelato restaurant and tonight they lit fireworks. The stupidity knows no bounds unfortunately.
Maybe Stromboli will flex her muscles and show us all how it’s done.
Meanwhile we carried on as usual. Drank wine while watching the sunset, enjoyed a home cooked dinner (the electrics here didn’t enjoy the combination of the oven and lighting being on at the same time) chatted and went to bed.
If you don’t hear from me tomorrow, we either got evacuated due to fire or did exactly the same things as we did today.
