Today we set off to stay in Manteigas for a couple of nights and do some walking in the Serra da Estrela region.
This area was affected by fires last year and as we got closer to the Serra da Estrela, we could see burnt, dead trees studding the landscape as far as the eye could see. Scrub had grown back between the blackened pines but the hills looked bleak.
However, as the road climbed, the tree line declined and we were up amongst boulders and rocks. The route was comprised of one switch back after another, making driving arduous. I could not believe it when we saw three enormous lorries hurtling down the mountain. The road was scary enough for a normal sized car but for a juggernaut?! Mental.
The scenery is spectacular and I can see why people visit the park. The highest point is Torre at 1993 metres. Bit of a cheat getting there though- there’s a track that goes right to the top where coaches disgorge tourists at the summit. I believe there is even a gift shop.
Our home for the next couple of nights is the Hotel Berne, which unsurprisingly appears to be run by Swiss people. Fondue on the menu and a slightly aloof attitude from the proprietor gave it away.
Simple but extremely tidy, the hotel’s main selling point is it’s pool which was very welcome. We also have a nice balcony which is so private that no-one knows you are there as I can confirm when I spied a gentleman’s bare behind as he changed into his swimming trunks poolside.
The rest of the afternoon was spent doing some washing and lying by the pool planning tomorrow’s walk and also what we may or may not do in the forthcoming days.
Before dinner, we walked into Manteigas and explored. It really is very pretty and surprisingly modern. I can’t help thinking that EU money has been poured into this very small town (population 3000). I am in two minds as to whether it was money well spent as it isn’t exactly busy and getting here in the winter must be a total nightmare. Still, what do I know and it’s a pleasant place to stay.
We ate at restaurant San Luiz and had wild boar (delicious) washed down with vinho verde. Did you know vinho verde is the new prosecco? Well if it isn’t, it should be.
Looking forward to our walk tomorrow which is along the glacial valley.
